If you look thru C:\WindowsUpdate.log, you can verify if the AU Client is checkin in with WUS Server. Scan thru C:\WindowsUpdate.log for the following entries;

2005-02-16 07:28:56-0800 1076 268 PT: Using server URL
http://YOURWSUSSERVERNAME/IPADDRESS:PORT/ClientWebService/client.asmx
2005-02-16 07:28:56-0800 1076 268 PT: Using server URL
http://YOURWSUSSERVERNAME/IPADDRESS:PORT/SimpleAuthWebService/SimpleAuth.asmx

And see if it successfully reported its status to the server.
