Patch Management Over SSL

Introduction to WSUS and SSL

Security of updates is paramount in all organisations. To increase the security of WSUS, you can encrypt communications between individual WUS servers and between WSUS clients and WSUS servers. By default, WSUS Servers do not communicate to other WSUS servers using SSL, although When a WSUS server is talking to Microsoft Update/Windows Update it always communicates using SSL.

SSL How to Guide

You need to do the following to implement SSL beteween your WSUS Servrers:

  1. Install a server certificate on WSUS server: Installing SSL Certificate
  2. Associate the certificate with WSUS virtual directories: Configuring WSUS With SSL
When using SSL, you can also require clients have SSL certificates. To this by adding a certificeate to your client computers or to child WSUS servers. See Add Certificate To Client Machines for more information on setting up a client certificate.
