WSUS Default All Languages Considered Harmful
|
WSUS is configured by default to download updates in all languages. While you can change this, unwary first time admins might miss it, and download a HUGE amount of unwanted patches.
There are two ways to improve this. First, make the default language for downloads the same as the language of the server WSUS is running on. Thus, if you are running a Welsh version of Windows Server, installing WSUS on this server would result in the default of only Welsh updates being downloaded. Second, there should be a 'to do' list item installed by default to direct the admin to check languages as part of the initial setup of a WSUS server.
A further point is that when a language is specified, that should be
the ONLY language for updates that are downloaded. At present, you get updates in languages that were not requested.
