Target groups enable you to target updates to specific computers, a major advance over SUS. By this, you can target the updates to the intended/targetted clients. There are two default target groups: - All Computers
- Unassigned Computers.
By default, each client computer is added to both these groups by the WSUS server when the client initially contacts the WSUS server. You can create custom target groups for different segments in the organization and most importantly, you can use that for testing prior to actual deployment. Setting up target groups is a three-step process.
1. You need to specify how you are going to load computers into the target groups. There are two options: - Server-side targeting: Server-side targeting involves manually adding each computer to its group.
- Client-side targeting: Client-side targeting involves automatically loading the clients by using either Group Policy or registry keys ("TargetGroup"="TargetGroup Name"). In case of client-side targetting, target group must also be created from WsUSADMIN;
2. Create your target groups: - In the WSUS console, click Computers.
- In the Tasks box, click Create a computer group.
- In the Group name box, type a name for your new computer group, and then click OK.
3. Finally, you move the computers into groups by using server-side targeting/client-side targeting.
