WSUS Install In VM

WSUS RC has been tested in both VMware Workstation and VPC VMs and it appears to work fine. There are no known issues with WSUS RC or a WSUS client running in a virtual machine environments specificially due to the VM software. That isn't to say you may not have issues loading WSUS in a VM.

Issues you encounter using WSUS in a VM are most likley of one of two types:

  • VM configuration - you may need to change the binding of the virtual NIC to the 'right' NIC for your environment, and you may need to experiment with the amount of ram needed for WSUS
  • WSUS Setup Issues - the most common source of problems is entering inaccurately or incorrectly the the WSUS server name into your WSUS policies. These issues are unrelated to the VM software in use!

Hi,

I use WSUS to manage a lot of Windows workstation (XP) Windows server 2000 and 2003.

I have also a physical server where there is 4 "VMWARE" virtuals Windows2003 servers.

Everything, seems to be OK, but i never see the 4 servers together in console. Once i see the server 1, once the server2...etc

When i look in the Wsus log, there is no error.

Have you an idea ?

I have a WSUS / Windows 2003 Server running in a VM on ESX 2.5, and it works absolutely great.   I plan to use this for testing, then move to a physical server for production...

I have it running on VMware GSX on a VM guest w/W2k3/IIS6 and it works perfectly with my other VM XP clients (so far, knock on wood).  My wood, that is!  :)  I'm dying to get going on this baby when it's finally released.  I'm very impressed with it so far.

I had a very similar error recently; in fact I found this page searching for it. I was trying to install Visual Studio 2005 Express on my Windows 64bit edition system. The installer was trying to download the 64bit prerequisite files when get a "the server does not support the necessary http protocol. Background intelligent transfer service (bits) requires that the server support the range protocol header" error. I don’t know why, but I thought you may like to know about a different instance of a similar problem.
