SO What To Do Next After Installing WSUS

After you have WSUS installed, there are several things you should do next. Check the log files for any failures - C:\Program Files\Update Services\LogFiles.

1. Check WSUS related services
Ensure the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and the Windows Server Update Service services are installed and running. If you are using MSDE to hold WSUS data, ensure the SQL$WSUS service is up and running.

2. Ensure Clients can connect to the WSUS Server
Use local (or Group) policy on both the new WSUS server and one other system to point to the newly installed WSUS server, and run wuauclt.exe /detectnow on the server and ensure the client is seen by WSUS. This will ensure that clients are connecting to the server. Take a look at Script to Force the Update Detection from Automatic Update Client (WUA) for updates on WSUS Server

3. Configure your options, and run an initial synchronization
This will download a number of updates, depending on what you specify and how many languages.

4. Ensure the WSUS service is installed on the same port configured in client policies
If WSUS was not installed in Default Website (ie on port 80), then you can reset this by running the script %ProgramFiles%\Update Services\SetupInstallSelfupdateOnPort80.

5. Confirm your clients are updated to use WSUS
Check the file version for wuauclt.exe, Wuaueng.dll. Both should have a version of 5.8.0.2469 or later. Check out Automatic Update Client Versions History

6. Check clients are detecting updates
Configure your test clients to detect regularly, then wait a while to see that the clients are connecting and are detecting any relevant updates.

7. Troubleshooting
Take a look at %Windir%\WindowsUpdate.log for any errors. For further assitance, post your issues on
WSUS News Groups. Download the following support tools for troubleshooting update issues;

8. Take a look at Known WSUS Issues and check out WSUS Links for more information.
