WSUS Wiki Diary0105

Diary for January 2005

This page serve as a diary for the WSUS Wiki site. As you add or update content, if you have questions, or even delete content, post here to explain why. Also you can use this as a place to discuss WSUS WIKI.

For an index of all earlier diary entries, see WSUS Wiki Diary Index. For December 2004 diary entries, see WSUS Wiki Diary1204. For February 2005 entries, see WSUS Wiki Diary0205.

Saturday 1 January 2005

Thomas Lee

I've created a new page for January, moved the old page to WSUS Wiki Diary1204, and created an index page: WSUS Wiki Diary Index.

Sunday 2 January 2005

Thomas Lee
Fixed the date on previous entry - I was getting ahead of myself!

Monday 3 January 2005

Thomas Lee

Made some minor updates cleaning up the lanugage, fixing the HTML, making pages consistent.

Tuesday 4 January 2005

Thomas Lee

Made a few more minor updates as yesterday.

Wednesday 5 January 2005

Added text to Approving updates, also added some detail and updated the order of things in the What's new in WUS. Also added more x-refs.

Updated my view on the I Love WSUS page, and have published a blog entry on my weblog at http://tfl09.blogspot.com.

Added the page, but need to get the complete set of files that are loaded for the AU client. I'd also like to add more info on the cleint.

David Dehghan Wow. Thomas, you are number #1 on top revision authors. (As you promised before). :-0

I renamed the diary page to WSUS Wiki Diary0105 so that we don't lose the history of diary as we archive it. Every month we just need to edit the link in the menu and point and create a new page.

I need to change the menu to reflect what we disscussed before on susserver.com forum. I will do that tomorrow.

Good news: There used to be a bug on this site that prevented people from putting \ on any page. Apparently the folks at editme.com have fixed the bug.

Guess I did not quite make the changes to the new diary page quite right! :-)
Nice catch. The change made by David was the right way to do it - but it 'broke' the Wiki Contributors page, as that pointed to The "WSUSWikiDiary" page, which does not exist any more. I now point from Wiki Contributors to WSUS Wiki Diary Index, which itself had to be changed to point out where to get the current month's content from. We could point from Wiki Contributors to the latest diary page, but I felt that would be more work each month.

Regarding the Menu - yes, go for it David. I thought Athif was going to do this, and held off during my holiday editing frenzy.

Finished off uploading installation screen shots, and have now added them in fully.

Will add some screen shots to other pages soon!

Updated SUS Links page with a new link to an article by Mitch Tulloch. Also did some typo corrections, and reorderd the first few links. Added Download Updates By Schedule page to reflect the comment. Added a confirmed new bug from newsgroups.

I spoke to David on the phone the other day, and one thing he mentioned was ensuring we are reviewing the content from the OEP newsgroup, and ensure it's been captured here. The updates I've made the past couple of days have been in that vein - adding details from the newsgroups into this site. This has meant some new pages!

We also need to get some more scripting information onto this site!

I got some bug-feedback today that asked me to expand on troubleshooting tools needed. These are now documented in Client Troubleshooting Tools Needed.

Updated the Wikipeadea entry for Windows Update . See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Update

Tusday 18 January 2005

David Dehghan I finally implemented the menu changes that we talked about on http://forums.susserver.com/index.php?s=25f3b7f435cb843a3ab2ceda9bae39e9&showtopic=4204 . The name of some of the pages are still too long. We can correct that at some point in the future so that the menu is even more clean.

Next we need a log/image for WUS wiki. ;-)

Thursday 20 January 2005

Thomas Lee added a link to misc in the menu - this just tidies up the menu making every entry clickable.

Sunday 23 January 2005
Thomas Lee added a new page on the status of the project. I'd be grateful for both comments on the idea itself, but also on the contents (and the language!). Do we need a disclaimer?

Also, I started putting some details on the likely status of each of WSUS Wish List items.

Hey, guyz, I am back from vacation. I have been surfing the wiki from morning and I see many new changes and wow the content we added is nicely formatted.

Answered the question as comment on What Is Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)? page.

Q: Where does this list come from? Is there a web link to this list that can be placed here to provide more authority?

A. I have seen this in the WUS Guides as well as in the News Groups too.

Updated the contents of patching Admin installs of office. I'm still not happy with this, but I think it reads better now!

I'm not clear either on the question or answer that Athif answered regarding What Is WUS. The list on the What Is Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)? page was, I thought, pretty much generated when I edited the content. I just moved through the content, aggregating it into sections, then I just created a list of each section. The list more or less wrote itself, based on the content. Or am I missing the question totally?

David Dehghan

All day today I worked on the tool that parses the site and gathers statistics. I added logging capabilities to the tool and scheduled the tool to run on the server every day. Now I don't have to manually run it anymore.

Added an item in Do You Know?

David Dehghan

;-( it is 3:30AM and i just finished the last report. http://beta.fotolove.com/default.aspx I am very satisfied with the results but I am going to die tomorrow and not be able to get up to go to work. I should not have stayed up so late.
