WSUS Wiki Diary1204

nSaturday 4 December

Thomas Lee - I've been busy on the site today. Amongst other things, I've built the start of an Installation Guide, and have made the Deployment and Installation Guides look the same. In the installatin guide, I've got space for screenshots.
Q: How do we upload screen shots to this site?

I've also put up an  Installation checklist at WSUS Installation Check List. I've got as far as pre-req's, installation and initial configuration. Comments??

David Dehghan: Good Idea Thomas. I was thinking about the fact that we need a way to communicate with each other about the future direction of this wiki. A forum format would be a lot more effective. I though about setting up a forum somewhere but a better idea would be to use susserver.com forum. That way we generate more traffic on Scott's site and the content that is generated in the forum is persisted on his site. I will send an email to Scott to see what he thinks. It takes a lot of communication and coordination between contributors to have a strong wiki community. Wikipeia community has figured a lot of that stuff so we can learn from them. I can also setup a periodic conference call for all of us to talk to eachother over the phone. I will research that next week.

editme.com allows you to upload pictures but for now I have disabled that so that it could not be missused for porn. We can just link to an external images for a while until I can figure out how to do this safely.

By the way, this site is getting about 2000 page hits a day. :-)

Sunday 5 December

Mohammed Athif Khaleel
This is the first time for me to get in touch with both Thomas and David. I really appreciate the idea to communicate with aka WUS WIKI Contributors , that way, we can share our thoughts/ideas even better, ultimately contributing to this wiki site. I am already Moderating Forums on Scotts site and I believe, its a good idea to use susserver.com.

Its really good news for me that this page in getting 2000 hits per day.. You wont believe, I am already advertising this site in my signature on susserver.com forums and encouraging the folks in the NG's to take advantage of the wiki site.

Hope, this wiki concept will grow in the days to come.!

Thomas Lee
With regards to site hits, I've signed up for a free counter at sitemeter, and have added it. It can be improved, but to do thiat, I need admin rights to install it into the menu (the 'improvements' requires Javascript). Can an adminisrator contact me off line and I'll pass along the necessary javascript code for this? Also: NB: you have to view the site meter site with IE, Firefox does not work!

Re pictures, I can understand why we want to restrict this - but I have a bunch of pics illustrating the setup process. I can uploade them to my own site, xref them and parhaps an admin can move them over at some point.

And regarding Scott's site and forums, great idea. Is there a wuswiki forum there already? What is the URL?

I've added a To Do Page page with suggestions of what needs doing.

Mohammed Athif Khaleel

Re scotts site, thatz not a wiki.. Its just a forum for which I am the Moderator. May be David is thinking of Wiki Forums on Scott's site. More on http://forums.susserver.com/. Thanks for adding TODO page. Hey, I am thinking to Merge What Is WUS? & What's new in WUS? to give a wider concept of WUS exlaining that in detail. What do you think ?? Let me know..

Thomas Lee

Another thing I've been contemplating is how to recognise the input of the coummunity. I'd like the site to be factual, knowedgable and creditable, without it becoming an "in your face" ego-trip or any form of personal advertising. I suspect every wiki faces this issue at the start.

We need to walk the balance between providing great content and allowing the contributors to be recognised. The trick is to recognise without the recognition being too up front or too in the face of potential users.

The majority of the pages here should be simple, and straight to the point. If the contributor wants to 'take credit' then 1-2 lines max at the bottom of the page seems fair enough. Alternatively, just list out major stuff done on the personal page (see Thomas Lee for one example of how this could be done).

Comments?

Mohammed Athif Khaleel

Totally agreed. Well, hopefully we will improve ourselves as the WIKI's. Since, this is a new concept I am working with for the first time.. I believe we will grow as a WIKI.

David Dehghan

I made a lot of progress tonight. I wrote a tool to screen scrape the entier wiki site and add stats about its evolution to a database. Then I created 2 repots here Wiki Statistics. For now I am using my fotolove.com server.

Eventually I would like to create a tool like this http://researchweb.watson.ibm.com/history/

I am going to put the code for these reports on sourceforge.com soon.

I also sent mail to Scott to ask to use his forum.

Refactoring What Is WUS? still a lot to be done in comming days.
Added content to WUS Before You Install
Refactored Target Groups page.

David Dehghan

I have been doing more research into how to measure success of a wiki site and how to encourage participation. I have been seeding content all over the place so that other folks can come in and fill the gaps.

Today I added a some content about Courtesy Rules and WSUS Wiki Signatures and Talk Pages. These are tools that facilitate participation in a wiki.

Wednesday 8 December

Mohammed Athif Khaleel

Added a new page, Approve Updates (Athif)
Added a new page, Bandwidth Considerations (Athif)
Added a new page, Office Administrative Installs (Athif)
Added to FAQ

Note for David: In the page Most Active Users Author: Athif and my homepage is Mohammed Athif Khaleel Please see if you can edit that

David Dehghan I can't edit the names in the Most active user list. It is the login name that you chose. You can create a page under that old name and point users to your other page.

I started counting the number of new pages that were created. see the most active users report.

Overall this wiki is doing great. But we need to increase the number of contributors. I will keep talking about this wiki within Microsoft. But externally I am not sure what to do. Maybe we can privately invite folks that we know to help edit and create more content. We don't want to press people too hard to turn them off.

One key point is that all the content that is generated on the private news group is not accessible to Google. So once the beta 2 is over the only content about WUS will be this wiki or the forum on susserver.com. So all the effort that is being put on the beta news group will be short lived.

Thursday 9 December

Mohammed Athif Khaleel

Hi David, thanks for the suggestion and as well, I created a page accordingly. One thing I am doing at susserver.com and faqshop.com is I am inviting folks to this wiki site to see the great content and if they can also contribute. Is it possible to have stats like users visited from other sites, just to know how far I am doing.

David Dehghan

It is 3:25 AM! and I have to go to work tomorrow, well today. But I just finished another report. Page List By Length

Mohammed Athif Khaleel

Added a new page, WUS with MSDE (Athif)

Thomas Lee
I added the pointer to WUS Wiki Diary back into the menu. I also took of the 'work in progress' note on the [WUS Installation Guide] page.

Mohammed Athif Khaleel

Added content to [WUS Installation Overview]. Completed the page with different scenarios. Take a look.

Hey, somehow my page is marked for deletion. Note: This page is marked for deletion. David, can you please check this out.

Friday 10 December

Mohammed Athif Khaleel

David, thanks for the suggestion. I was able to Unmark the page which was set for deletion.

Thomas Lee

Did a bunch of things:

  • Fixed a bunch of typos.
  • Made the display of names on the contributor's page (and the title on their home page) consistent.
  • Updated the start of the [What Is WUS] page, to provide a gentler overview into the content. I'd like to go further here, and to provide some more organisation of the current content.
  • Added the start of a page on the background to WUS as a patch management tool.

It's been a long and hard week, so apologies for not being able to do more this week!

Saturday 11 December

Thomas Lee
I've moved some things around in the menu. And I've removed the GPO troubleshooting link from the main menu. My idea is to keep the menu simple. Yes, GPO Troubleshooting is important, but it's a subset of troubleshooting. I'd like to keep the menu compact enough to fit inside a single smaller page/monitor completely. Feel free to disagree, and to revert! :-)

Also tried to rationalise SUS troubleshooting. I moved the AU content to a lower level page, added some links, and another category. I've also done some editing of the content for consistency, readability

Added content regarding other WUSs.

Sunday 12 December 2004

Scott Korman

have added a "WUS Wiki Discussions" area to my forums site, located at: http://forums.susserver.com/index.php?showforum=15

Cleaned up the menu to use Wiki Code, rather than HTML. The Home link still uses HTML, as it gives a cleaner looking URL in the address bar./p>

Mohammed Athif Khaleel

Kudos to Scott. Well, I have added my comments on WUS Wiki Discussions

David Dehghan Yeah. The forum format will be more effective at having these conversations. I posted a number of comments on the forum. I look forward to your responses.

I have also been updating the wiki stats daily. It is going to be hard to beat Atif at creating revisions ;-) He is a machine.

Thomas Lee
I will try to beat Atif! :-))
Also - somehow there were a bunch of extra STRONG tags on this page, with the result being that a bunch of text was bold. It took some manual editing, but it looks OK now!

Have also done some tidying, and fixed some typos

David Dehghan How do we compare against other wiki sites? well, take a look at http://wsus.editme.com/WikiStats I parsed several other sites to see who is doing what on them. I still need to find a comparable wiki about a technical product so that I can see how many contributors they have etc.

Monday 13 December 2004

Mohammed Athif Khaleel

Interesting Comments from David & Thomas, I like that. Hey, I am trying to practice myself to discuss that in WUS Wiki Discussions before I edit that. Ok, I am proposing a menu http://wsus.editme.com/MenuAthif and see my comments for "Why should we use this menu?"on WUS Wiki Discussions

Added a new page [WU Son DC] explaining Known bug with IWAM_Computername, while installing WUS on a Windows 2000 SP# 4 Domain Controller.

Added the same to Confirmed WUS Bugs

TC Watson

While pouring through the various pages, I've edited one or three for typos and whatnot.

I'd like to suggest that upgrading from SUS to WUS get it's own section. I think that alot of SUS admins will be looking at the pros and cons of upgrading over building a newer (smaller in some cases) system from scratch. A nice top level section on that would be useful to the community, I'm thinking.

Thomas Lee
TCwatson makes a good point about the upgrade needing its own section. Oddly, I was thinking this last night, but ended up rebulding my laptop instead of posting more about it <grin>. One way to do this is to point from the installation guide to the upgrading page and to this end, I've updated the Installation Guide page to point to the WUS upgrade from SUS page. Much to my surprise, I added a page reference to a page only to discover that been Athif had created it previously! How cool is that!!

David Dehghan I have enable the ability for anyone to upload attachments. Hopefully no one will upload porn ;-) . If it dose happen then I will restrict it again and come up with a moderation mechanism. The problem is that this wiki software dose not allow you to have a moderator role. You are either site admins or users.

The only extra thing that site admin could do was to upload attachments. So now we are all equal. ;-)

Please be mindful of the space used on the server. That is make sure your image size are reasonable.

Being able to add images should make the troubleshooting steps more appealing.

Thomas Lee
KEWL... Er - one smal point - how do we upload here? :)

Tuesday 14 December 2004

Mohammed Athif Khaleel

Thomas, I have prepared rough notes on that & once I complete that I will add the content to Upgrading from SUS to WUS. Yes, adding images to the notes will really make a difference. David, Let us know how to upload images. I think thomas already has images on installations so I will not touch this section & I will try add image on other sections.

David Dehghan Here is how to add images to a page. I have not done that myslef but it should work. http://help.editme.com/InsertingImages

Wednesday 15 December 2004

Thomas Lee

I've started to link the setup image that David uploaded to the setup page. I've run out of time this morning but you get the idea. I have additional images that I'll convert up to PNG and upload to complete the page - probably over the weekend.

Friday 17 December 2004

Thomas Lee
Started to refactor the WUS troubleshooting page. Some great stuff here, but unstructured. More help needed!

Tuesday 21 December 2004

Mohammed Athif Khaleel
Added to Do You Know?

Thomas Lee David had combined two wishes regarding WUS extensibilty. I took this one step further to combine the two existing wishes into one, and onto one page. I also added some post-installation troubleshooting tips

David Dehghan Yesterday the site was down because of a billing issue. It should not happen again.

I am going on vacation for the next 10 days or so and will not have access to internet. I will ask my brother to monitor this site and call me if there is any issue.

Athif - you should go and make your menu changes. Your proposal is better than what we have at the moment. If you can take some suggestions from my proposal that would be great; that is, if you can make it a bit more compact like my proposal it would be better.

I am hoping to take a lot of cool pictures in the next few days. I will upload them to http://www.fotolove.com when I get back. ;-)

Wed Dec 22 2004

Thomas Lee
Did some more updates to the WUS faq - tightened up the language, and formatting. Killed of some grammer/spelling errors.

Updated the WUS Installation Guide - added information on disk space usage to the WUS Installation Prereqs page.

Do we need both WUS Installation Prereqs and [WU Sbeforeyouinstall]
??

Fixed the Courtesy rules page (the heading was misspealt) <grin>.

I agree about making the menu changes!

This page is getting long - and that pushes up traffic (when the contributors typically want to see the _end_ of the page.

So let's start a new page each month. We keep this page [WUS Wiki Diary] as the 'current' page, and have a [WUS Wiki Diary Archive] of older pages for those who want them. If no one objects, I might just do this! ;-)

TC Watson

Browsed through some of the new content added since I last visited (out doing site visits over the last week). Found a few typos and awkward grammer structures. Added some content to [Whatis WUS]. Been a little tied up with our SMS 2003 implementation but should be able to kick in more content following the holidays as I get my own testing off the ground.

David Dehghan

About archiving this page: If we add all the text to this page and then move it to the archive page we lose the history and the statistics for this page would be wrong. It would be better if we just changed the menu link to something like diaryjan05. And the have a page (DiaryALL) that give you a link to all previous monthly pages.

Sun 26 December 2004 - Boxing Day

Thomas Lee Did a bit more editing of [What Is WUS]. There was a lot of really good stuff kind of dumped into the page, and I'm trying to make it all fit coherently.

Oh - and regarding spelling: Organisation, synchronise, and colour are spelt properly. :-)

Tuesday 28 December 2004

Thomas Lee
Spent some time updating some of the key pages, in particular [Whats New In WUS] [WUS Troubleshooting] and WSUS Database. In the [WUS Troubleshooting] page, I moved some more of the great content to lower level pages, and ensured consistency between them. I also moved details of the WUS Database to the WSUS Database page and off [Whats New In WUS].

Also added the [WUSAPI] Page.

Updates the page to read better. :-)

Wednesday 29 December 2004

Thomas Lee
Finished the moving of details from the [WUS Troubleshooting] page to lower level pages. The [WUS Troubleshooting] page now points to troubleshooting content in more detailed pages. I suspect we could re-factor some of the categorries in this list.

Added the [Troubleshooting WUS Office Update] page to contain more content around this area. More information is needed here!

I finished off re-factoring the content on the [What Is WUS] page. I added an index to the content at the start of the page, and made the headings consistent. I also had to do some hand editing of the pages to improve the HTML.

Spent some time on the SUS and SUS FAQ pages. I ensured the colour codings of Q's and A's was the same (the last half of the SUS faq was in all blue) and tried to edit the text for consistency, etc. I added a few comments (in red!) where I am unclear on the Q/A and corrected the typos and grammar.

I've also been thinking about the programming of WUS, and the WUS API stuff. We really need more scripting/dev content here!!

Have you noticed that the site counters now work in Firefox? Also, look at the browser share report. Interesting!

A question: how often do the wiki stats pages get updated? And who updates them?

Thursday 30 December 2004
Thomas Lee
Probably my last post this year. I've done a heck of a lot of updating on this site over the past couple of days - and have even overtaken Athif as most active <grin>. No doubt he'll make up when he gets back.

I've spent today doing some minor tidying of the site - fixing some html and spelling errors and improving the drafting. Nothing major!

Happy new years to one and all!
